Interested in Becoming a Foster?

Our foster network is what makes what we do possible! They are our extended family and the real angels behind the scenes!

What it takes to be a foster w/SSCAR

As a foster parent, you will provide a safe and loving environment for feeding, care, and socialization.

Basic Foster Requirements:

  • 18 years old or older

  • A separate room or space to keep foster animals separate from your personal pets

    • We suggest that your foster pet have an area already selected where they will eat and sleep. This can be a guest room or the kitchen, even a large bathroom can be used to slowly introduce an animal to your home.

    • Allowing your new foster too much room to roam is not usually the best scenario.

    • A secure, secluded location allows the animal to get acquainted with the new surroundings a little at a time. If you have pets at home, make sure to keep them separate from your fosters at first.

  • Ability to transport to and from the SSCAR designated vet as needed for vaccines and medical check-ups

  • Agree to bring your foster pet to any adoption event as requested by staff of SSCAR

  • Time: Any foster in your care will require time and attention.

    • Foster pets, especially bottle babies, require a significant time commitment so please make sure that you consider your professional and personal obligations and speak with SSCAR staff about how much time your specific fosters will require.

  • Patience: All rescue animals have a back story and can have trauma. They need time, love and patience to acclimate to their new surroundings and come out of their shell.

    • SSCAR staff is always available to our foster families in case they have concerns about their foster pet. You’re not in this alone.

  • Animal specific experience/requirements:

    • Pit Bulls:

      • Fenced in backyard or if you live in an apartment, access to a local park

      • If you live in an HOA, cannot have any breed restrictions

      • provide 3 references, preferably 1 from your veterinarian

      • If you have any dogs currently in your home, they need to be no less than 1 year old and up to date on their vaccines as well as dog-friendly

Additional Information:

  • If needed, SSCAR will provide bedding and a crate. All provided items will need to be returned at the time of drop off, but if you purchased supplies for your foster pet you are welcome to keep them for the next foster.

  • You will be given the opportunity to visit with the animals and learn more about their specific needs.

    • If they need medicine, you will be shown how to administer and store it. You will be given any necessary supplies to care for the animal during their stay in your home.

  • We ask that fosters follow our guidelines on feeding, training, and medicating your foster pet, as provided by SSCAR staff.

  • Foster dogs can be taken in public on a case-by-case basis, considering their age and behavior.

    • While socializing is very important, we do not want to put dogs in potentially uncomfortable situations.

    •  Foster dogs should NEVER be brought to dog parks, as there is the strong possibility of unvaccinated dogs, disease, intestinal parasites, or dog fights.

    • Public parks are great places for dogs to be seen by the public and meet new people, but we ask that you do not introduce them to other dogs unless you have been trained to do so and approved by SSCAR staff.
